What! I don’t have to change my RMP because I can get defect dimensions from an AI Visual Defect Detection service! (124485)

The majority of Victoria councils have Road Management Plans (RMPs) that specify the intervention standards for road defects based on their dimensions. Taking potholes as an example, intervention may be specified when:

  • Diameter is 300mm or greater and
  • Depth is 50mm or greater
  • Intervention Days:
    • Local arterial – 5 days
    • Major collector – 15 days
    • Minor collector – 15 days
    • Local access – 20 days
    • Limited access – 50 days

In the last 5 years, numerous solutions that visually pick up road defects have hit the market. They have typically relied on consumer-based phones (e.g. iPhone, Google Pixels etc) to collect the vision of the road corridor. This vision is then analysed using AI to generate defects. There has been limited success in accurately calculating the defect dimensions from this vision.

As a consequence of this, the adoption of visual defect detection techniques in Victorian Councils is must less than its NSW peers.

Retina Visions has been investing in new cameras and AI processing specifically aimed at:

  • Getting the defect GPS location within 20cm
  • Accurately calculating the defect dimensions while travelling up to 110 kph

By utilizing these solutions that calculate defect dimensions, councils are able to:

  • Maintain their RMPs and defect intervention levels
  • Achieve a 50x or greater defect detection capability
  • Focus on the defects that meet intervention levels

This results in safer roads for the public, which is what we all want.
